After yet another pitiful performance in Bergen, Rangers welcome Kilmarnock to Ibrox on Sunday. With the Ayrshire side sitting a point ahead of Rangers in fifth, Stuart Kettlewell’s men have every reason to feel that they will be able to get something out of the game. They come into the fixture off the back of a disappointing 3-0 hammering by league leaders Hearts, but with Rangers falling to an even more disappointing 3-0 loss to a distinctly average Brann side, few will be putting Rangers on their Sunday coupon.
Stuart Kettlewell has an established reputation in Scottish football, with his teams known for their defensive solidity. He has lived up to this reputation with Kilmarnock, with his side leading the SPFL in interceptions per match with 10.3. This season Kilmarnock have been utilising a 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 formation, something which will almost certainly continue at Ibrox on Sunday.
David Watson, Killie academy product, provides the main attacking threat from midfield with 3 goals scored so far this season. Notably, these goals have all been scored from around the 6-yard box, with crosses coming in from the wingbacks who, as always with a 5-3-2 system, provide the wide threat for Kilmarnock.
From a Rangers point of view, many fans will be hoping that Danny Rohl will shake things up massively for this fixture. Chermiti, Rothwell and Souttar have provided an absolutely shameful spine of the team, with fan-favourite Raskin, Norwegian international Aasgaard and loanee defenders Nasser Djiga and Jayden Meghoma also disappointing in Norway on Thursday night. Former Sheffield Wednesday man Gassama is still in the good books of most supporters after his explosive start to the European campaign, however he and Oliver Antman on the opposite flank are also starting to test the patience of the Ibrox stands.
While Rohl is unlikely to stray far from the established 4-3-3 formation, with a change to a 4-2-3-1 set up being the only imaginable change, it is expected that we will see a significant rotation in personnel. It will be very surprising should Cornelius not return to a starting berth at centre back, while many fans want to see Lyall Cameron and Connor Barron installed in the centre of the park.
Ultimately, Danny Rohl has inherited a shambolic state of affairs that he has not had enough time to take over yet. With this in mind, it is unlikely that we will see any kind of notable improvement come Sunday. Kilmarnock will sit back and invite the pressure from an impotent Rangers attack and look to capitalise on the break against a feeble Rangers defence.
My prediction: 1-1, with Tavernier scoring for Rangers.
